Holiday demand calendar: when 12 gift categories peak

Five years of Google search data for 12 holiday gift categories: the month each peaks, how many weeks before Christmas demand lands, October 2026 versus 2025.

Superdemands team Published Data as of 2026-11-03

Ranking of the five holiday gift categories with the largest October year over year search change, led by PlayStation 5 at plus 30.9 percent.

Holiday gift demand does not arrive all at once. Five years of weekly Google search data for 12 holiday product categories shows two tribes: five categories that peak in November in all five seasons, roughly four weeks before December 25, timing consistent with deal-driven buying, and a December cluster that peaks within about a week of the holiday itself. Instant Pot straddles the line, peaking in November in three of five seasons and in January in the other two. The October 2026 reading versus October 2025 adds a current layer: PlayStation 5 search interest is up 30.9 percent year over year and LEGO sets are up 19.3 percent, while robot vacuum interest is down 32.9 percent and Dyson Airwrap is down 28.3 percent.

Method: five holiday seasons of weekly search data, September to January

Every number below comes from the same pull: weekly Google Search interest for each of the 12 category keywords, from 2021-11-06 to 2026-10-31, about 260 weekly points per keyword. Google normalizes each keyword's series to a 0 to 100 index over its own full window, so an index of 100 for LEGO sets and an index of 100 for air purifiers do not represent the same search volume. Only the shape within a category is comparable, never the level across categories. That normalization is what makes the calendar comparison work: a peak is meaningful inside a keyword, and the year over year reading compares October weeks against October weeks, which keeps the normalization window constant.

The calendar itself uses five complete holiday seasons, 2021 through 2025. For each season, defined as September through the following January and assigned to the year of its December, the peak is the single highest weekly index value. The typical lead time is the median of the five seasonal peaks, measured in weeks before December 25. The October reading is the mean of that month's weekly values; the year over year figure compares October 2026 against October 2025. The 2026 season is excluded from the calendar because the data ends on 2026-10-31, before any holiday peak could land. Six categories peak in November, about four weeks before Christmas

Half of the categories studied peak in November in every one of the five seasons, except Instant Pot, which did so in three of five. The median lead time for this group is 4.0 weeks before December 25, which is Black Friday week.

Category Peak month (mode of 5 seasons) Typical lead 2025 season peak (index) Oct YoY
PlayStation 5 November 4.0 weeks 96 +30.9%
Espresso machine November 4.0 weeks 71 -6.6%
Robot vacuum November 4.0 weeks 59 -32.9%
Instant Pot November (3 of 5) 3.7 weeks 29 -17.2%
Air purifier November 4.1 weeks 28 +4.9%
Noise cancelling headphones November 4.0 weeks 27 -11.1%

For PlayStation 5, robot vacuum, espresso machine and noise cancelling headphones, the seasonal peak fell on Black Friday week in all five seasons: the weeks beginning November 27 in 2021, November 26 in 2022, November 25 in 2023, November 30 in 2024 and November 29 in 2025. This suggests these are deal categories: the purchase is planned, and search interest concentrates on the week when prices are expected to fall. Instant Pot is the least settled member of the group: it peaked in November in three seasons and in early January in two, so its Black Friday status is the weakest claim in this table.

Two sub stories matter. PlayStation 5 is the strongest five-year run in the study: its 2023 season peak hit 100, the maximum of its entire index window, and the 2025 season peak reached 96. Robot vacuum tells the opposite story: its 2025 season peak of 59 was the highest of the five seasons, yet its October 2026 reading of 18.8 sits 32.9 percent below October 2025 at 28.0. The long-run context: the category's seasonal highs have climbed from the low 20s early in the window to 59 in 2025, while its October baseline has fallen. A sibling category with a full demand profile is air fryer demand, which behaves the same Black Friday way and is worth comparing side by side.

Six categories peak in December, most within a week of the holiday

The other half peaks in December or the first days of January: the group's typical lead time sits about 0.7 weeks around the holiday, with most seasonal peaks landing within a few days after December 25 and Christmas tree the lone early exception at 3.0 weeks before. This suggests last-minute gift buying, with peaks arriving too late for long comparison shopping.

Category Peak month (mode of 5 seasons) Typical lead 2025 season peak (index) Oct YoY
LEGO sets December (3 of 5) -0.9 weeks 100 +19.3%
Nintendo Switch December (4 of 5) -0.7 weeks 88 -3.8%
Dyson Airwrap December (3 of 5) -0.7 weeks 82 -28.3%
Kindle December (4 of 5) -0.7 weeks 98 +3.8%
Weighted blanket December (4 of 5) 0.1 weeks 69 -1.9%
Christmas tree December (5 of 5) 3.0 weeks 93 +9.4%

The data shows Nintendo Switch peaks in the final week of December or the first week of January in all five seasons: January 1, 2022 for the 2021 season, then December 31, 2022, December 30, 2023, December 28, 2024 and December 27, 2025. Kindle follows nearly the same script, peaking in the final December week in four of five seasons, with the 2024 season reaching 100, the five-year maximum. Christmas tree is the early outlier of the group: its peak lands around 3.0 weeks before December 25, on the same early-December weekend in every season. The exact peak weeks: December 4, 2021; December 3, 2022; December 2, 2023; December 7, 2024; and December 6, 2025. This suggests buying a tree is a fixed ritual date on the calendar, not a deal-driven event.

LEGO sets deserves the long-run read. Its 2025 season peak of 100 was the five-year maximum, and the category has climbed from a 2021 season peak of 66 through 78 in 2023 to that record. October 2026 at 51.0 is 19.3 percent above October 2025 at 42.8, so both the long run and the recent move point the same direction.

October 2026 vs October 2025: the year over year read

Gaming and toys are running hotter than last October, while small appliances cool. The October year over year reading separates momentum from memory. Gaming and toys lead: PlayStation 5 at +30.9 percent, LEGO sets at +19.3 percent, Christmas tree at +9.4 percent, air purifier at +4.9 percent, Kindle at +3.8 percent. The flat middle: weighted blanket at -1.9 percent, Nintendo Switch at -3.8 percent, espresso machine at -6.6 percent. The cooling end: noise cancelling headphones at -11.1 percent, Instant Pot at -17.2 percent, Dyson Airwrap at -28.3 percent, robot vacuum at -32.9 percent.

Two categories break the pattern: their seasonal peaks sit at five-year highs while their October readings sit well below last year's. The November and December data will show whether those peaks repeat. Dyson Airwrap's 2024 season peak of 100 was its five-year maximum, but October 2026 sits 28.3 percent below October 2025, with the October 2026 average at 26.0 against 36.2 a year earlier. Robot vacuum has the same shape: a record 2025 season peak of 59 paired with an October reading of 18.8 against 28.0. This suggests both categories still deliver their seasonal gift peak while losing the early-season search build-up that used to precede it. Neither should be read as a demand crisis from a single October, but both are worth watching when the November data lands on the movers board.

What the calendar says about the next four weeks

The five-year pattern says the November group peaks around Black Friday week, roughly four weeks out from December 25, and the December group follows three to four weeks later. If it holds, PlayStation 5, robot vacuum, espresso machine, air purifier and noise cancelling headphones peak first. Christmas tree, the early December outlier, should reach its seasonal high about three weeks before December 25. Instant Pot is the straddler to watch: November in three of five seasons, January in two. LEGO sets, Nintendo Switch, Kindle, Dyson Airwrap and weighted blanket should follow last. The two categories to watch hardest are the ones where October disagrees with the season: whether the PlayStation 5 October surge converts into a November peak matching its 2023 record, and whether the robot vacuum and Dyson Airwrap October declines drag their seasonal peaks down with them.

One honest limit: a search index measures interest, not sales. A category can dominate the calendar with research queries from people who then buy a competitor's product, or never buy at all. The 2026 season is also outside this data, so this report describes what usually happens, not what will happen this time. The numbers are Google search interest, weekly, normalized per keyword, and they should be read that way.

FAQ

Why can't the index levels be compared between categories? Each keyword is normalized to its own 0 to 100 window, so a 100 for one category is a different absolute search volume than a 100 for another. Compare peaks, timing and year over year change within a category, not the heights across them.

Does a November peak mean the category is a deal category? The data shows Black Friday week holds the peak five years running for four categories, PlayStation 5, robot vacuum, espresso machine and noise cancelling headphones, which suggests planned, price-sensitive buying. It does not prove any single shopper waited for a discount, only that collective search interest concentrates there.
